iCloud, Google or a computer copy is the safest thing you can do while the device still switches on.
If the phone still starts, back up before you travel. Photos that only live on the handset are the ones people lose when a board or battery job needs a reset.
If it will not start, say that on the form. Data recovery is an assessment, not a promise.
Ask about the model, battery behaviour, previous repairs and whether the account lock is clear — not just the cosmetic grade.
